Massachusetts Automobile Insurance Pricing per Mile

Massachusetts is considering changing from a tiered pricing structure for automobile insurance policies. I believe that is a great idea, based upon the following assumptions:

  • the more you drive, the more likely you are to be in an accident, cause an accident, either directly or indirectly
  • a financial incentive to drive less will result in people driving less
  • less driving will result in a lesser dependency on foreign oil
  • less driving will result in lower emissions
Opponents say that commuters driving into Boston will be penalized for their long commute. That is a valid concern, because people who drive less already get a discount by having to buy less gas.
