Sardines versus Whales

I have a million metaphors for business: hunting, farming, and fishing, to name a few. When it comes to sales, I prefer the fishing metaphor. So I’ve been musing today about sales - about whether its better to catch enough minnows to eat for the day, or set out to catch a whale and eat for a month. (I know whaling is illegal and cruel, and that overfishing is unsustainable as far as I understand, but this is a metaphor!)

It turns out that I’m more comfortable catching zillions of sardines than I am chasing the whale. When it comes to hunting or farming, I’m also more comfortable raising crops than going after a single catch. Which is the better business model? It all depends, and since I’m running my own business, the model I’m more comfortable with is the better model! :-)
